Andreea-Lorena Bojenoiu

Exercise for Image Decoding

September 16 - October 21, 2017

Through her artistic practice, ALB (Andreea-Lorena Bojenoiu) investigates the concept of the image, examining it as both a painterly phenomenon and a broader cultural construct. Her work approaches the image as a living, dynamic surface where layers of meaning and cultural codes are continuously built, dismantled, and reimagined. In this exploration, ALB engages in a symbolic archaeology of surfaces, uncovering the historical, material, and conceptual strata that shape how images are formed, interpreted, and understood in contemporary culture.

ALB employs a distinctive and deeply personal technique that involves peeling back the layers of paint applied to the canvas. This meticulous act of deconstruction transforms the canvas into both a site of inquiry and a medium of expression. By unfolding the painted layers, she examines the shifting status of the image, questioning its authenticity and its complex relationship with perceived reality. Her work challenges viewers to reconsider the constructed nature of visual perception and its entanglement with memory, time, and materiality.

Central to ALB's creative process are a set of guiding principles that disrupt conventional approaches to painting: a deliberate rejection of painterly intent, a refusal to reproduce, depict, or recreate. These principles free her practice from the constraints of representation, enabling her to forge a new path where the image exists as a site of tension between abstraction and materiality. Through this performative process, ALB’s work becomes a profound and evolving dialogue that interrogates the boundaries of the image, perception, and cultural identity.
